Regrets, I’ve had a few…

This post is part of a series inspired by prompts from the book 642 Things to Write About by the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto.  If you want to play along, write your own post (on your blog or other online forum) and post a link in the comments.  I’ll add “shout-outs” at the end of my post and on the Keep Swimmin’ Facebook page to anyone who shares a link.

The prompt: #42: Something you’ve always regretted saying

“Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.”
Henry David Thoreau

There are certainly regrettable things that have happened to me…this thing, and this thing, and definitely this thing.  And trust me, there’s lots more where that came from.  However, as much as there are things that didn’t turn out quite the way I wanted them to, there is a lot about where it all led me that makes me think going back for a big old do-over would not be the best idea.

However, there are a few things that I have said that I wish I hadn’t.  And when the opportunity arises in the future where these sorts of things might be the first thing on the tip of my tongue – I hope I will have the presence of mind to go another direction.

1) Every time I said something meaner than I needed to say

Sometimes the snappy and snarky jumps out before my brain can gain control of the situation, I wish it didn’t happen as much as it does.

2) Any time I said “I’d be happy to” and then bitched relentless about it later

Fairly self-explanatory, I think.

3) Any time I said “I’m listening” when I wasn’t

If I profess my attention, you oughta have it.  If you don’t, I need to fess up and fix it.

4) That time I said, “Yes, these knickers are an excellent fashion choice”

Just. No.

5) Any time I have said “I Love You” for the wrong reasons

Every time I said it to convince someone they loved me back, as emotional blackmail, as anything other than an expression of how I honestly felt.  Cheapens the whole thing.

How about you? Regrets?

  1. I’ve always regretted this time when I was around 9, I was at the Mall of America with my mom and she asked if I wanted to get a chocolate ice cream cone or a bowl of ice cream that we could share. I chose the chocolate ice cream cone and I’ll never forget how selfish I felt eating it and wishing I could make the choice over again. (luckily, she forgave me hehe)
